چکیده

Inconsistent findings regarding the emotional Stroop effect in healthy subjects may be explainedby confounding effects of stimulus valence and arousal, and individual differences in anxiety. Here, we examined reaction time data in a healthy sample using the emotional Stroop task whilecarefully matching arousal level of emotional words. Independent of valence, emotional wordselicited emotional interference, indicating that arousal determines emotional interference.Furthermore, independent of valence, emotional words were better recalled and recognized thanneutral words. With regard to individual differences in anxiety we found that state anxiety wasassociated with emotional interference, that is, subjects with high state anxiety showed greaterinterference than subjects with low state anxiety. There was no influence of trait anxiety. Thesefindings indicate that the emotional Stroop interference effect is mediated by word arousal andnot word valence. Furthermore, subjects’ state anxiety influences emotional interference of highlyarousing words by biasing attentional resources.

Neural Correlates of Boredom in Music Perception

Introduction: Music can elicit powerful emotional responses, the neural correlates of which have not been properly understood. An important aspect about the quality of any musical piece is its ability to elicit a sense of excitement in the listeners. In this study, we investigated the neural correlates of boredom evoked by music in human subjects. Methods: We used EEG recording in nine sub...

An Investigation into the Individual Differences Correlates of Iranian Undergraduate EFL Learners’ Writing Competence: A Mixed Methods Approach

The present study adopted a mixed-methods research design and explored the role of a set of cognitive (i.e., aptitude and working memory) and motivational (i.e., self-regulatory capacity and self-efficacy beliefs) individual difference variables in the writing quality and composing behavior of 78 Iranian undergraduate EFL learners. The necessary data were collected through a series of instrumen...

Emotional and cognitive processing of narratives and individual appraisal styles: recruitment of cognitive control networks vs. modulation of deactivations

Research in psychotherapy has shown that the frequency of use of specific classes of words (such as terms with emotional valence) in descriptions of scenes of affective relevance is a possible indicator of psychological affective functioning. Using functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), we investigated the neural correlates of these linguistic markers in narrative texts depicting core asp...

Neural Correlates of Craving in Methamphetamine Abuse

Introduction: Methamphetamine is a powerful psychostimulant that causes significant neurological impairments with long-lasting effects and has provoked serious international concerns about public health. Denial of drug abuse and drug craving are two important factors that make the diagnosis and treatment extremely challenging. Here, we present a novel and rapid noninvasive method...

Cognitive control mechanisms, emotion and memory: a neural perspective with implications for psychopathology.

In this paper we provide a focused review of the literature examining neural mechanisms involved in cognitive control over memory processes that can influence, and in turn are influenced by, emotional processes. The review is divided into two parts, the first focusing on working memory and the second on long-term memory. With regard to working memory, we discuss the neural bases of (1) control ...
